Hanawa

This is a piss-take by a Japanese comedian about the area of Japan where I am living. Our teacher played it to us in one the compulsory Japanese classes for new JETs, and I couldn't resist translating it for my webbie. Enjoy! :D

English

Today, as usual, the kids are walking to and from school
With helmets on
You hardly ever see a car
But they’re wearing helmets with fluorescent tape on*

More than half the class go to the same barber
And the other half get it done by their mothers

Saga, Saga have finally got a gyuudon restaurant
It’s got the orange sign, but it’s a “Yoshidaya"**

The girls go crazy for burnouts
And what’s a camisole, anyway?
Bloody hell, the ants are huge!
And I don’t know why, but Natadecoco*** is huge here now

S-A-G-A, Saga, S-A-G-A, Saga
Matsuyuki Yasuko is from Saga
But she keeps it real quiet

Going down Saga’s main highway on the bus
It’s rice fields as far as the eye can see – it’s just like the Yayoi Era
The only buildings here are houses
So the bus stop is called “Yamashita’s House”

Locking the door when you go out
Is unheard of in Saga
I came home from a family holiday and got in the door
To find the old lady from next door asleep there in her underwear

Each prefecture has its own wonderful slogan
For Saitama it’s “Saitama: A Land Full Of Colour!”
For Okinawa it’s “Let’s Go! Come On Down To Okinawa!”
For Saga it’s “Let’s Find Saga!”
God, those Saga folks are a negative lot!

S-A-G-A, Saga, S-A-G-A, Saga
Makise Riho is from Saga
But you can bet she keeps that quiet!

S-A-G-A, Saga, S-A-G-A, Saga
Egashira is from Saga
Keep it quiet!

S-A-G-A, S-A-G-A, oh, oh, Saga Prefecture
S-A-G-A, Saga
It’s a sad saga

*Japanese kids in big cities wear fluorescent tape on their bike helmets so cars can see them in the dark
**There’s a huge gyuudon chain in Japan called Yoshinoya, which is widely recognised by its orange signs. And so basically what this guy is saying is that since Saga is so deserted, Yoshinoya won’t go near it, so they have to do their own rip-off version. It’s like saying “It’s got the Golden Arches but it’s called McDougals.”
***Coconut jelly dessert that was popular 10 years ago and apparently screams “90s”
